Photoplay Jan.-Apr. 1927

    • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): Olive Borden, Louise Brooks (as if you couldn’t already tell), Arlette Marchal, and Lois Wilson.
    • Brooks of course would be “rediscovered” in the last quarter of the 20th century. More on her in a later post.
    • Lois Wilson was Daisy Buchanan in the silent film version of The Great Gatsby in late 1926, with actor Neil Hamilton portraying Nick Carraway. Yes, the same Neil Hamilton who later appeared as Commissioner Gordon in the famous 196os Batman TV series!
    • The prolific Hamilton was also in 1927’s The Joy Girl co-starring with January cover subject Olive Borden.

Photoplay July-Oct. 1926: A New Look

  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance:) Dorothy Mackaill, Doris Kenyon, Marion Davies, Alice Joyce.
  • As you can see, Photoplay’s cover now includes the head and torso of the subject. Previously the usual cover shot had been a close-up of the face. We’ll see how long the new look lasts.

  • Betty Bronson was a dancer who nabbed the coveted film role of Peter Pan.
  • April cover girl May Allison would marry Photoplay editor/publisher James T. Quirk in 1926. She’d graced the November 1923 cover.

  • Cover subjects: mega-star Jackie Coogan (November) and prolific actress Lois Wilson (December).Both Coogan and Wilson had lengthy careers that lasted well past the silent film era.
  • Coogan of course acted into the 1960s as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family. Not to mention he was the impetus for Coogan’s Law, legislation regarding  children working in the movies.
  • In addition to acting in both silent and sound films Wilson wrote and produced. She also appeared on Broadway and worked in television.

Photoplay July-Oct. 1924

  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): Anna Q. Nilsson, Betty Compson, Colleen Moore, and making her Photoplay cover debut, Mary Philbin.
  • The August cover features a Compson portrait by Tempest Inman.
  • And if that’s not enough to reel in the reader there’s also the tantalizing question “Is Bobbed Hair An Extravagance?” 
  • October cover girl Mary Philbin would go on to co-star with Lon Chaney in 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera.
