  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): blondes Greta Garbo, Marion  Davies, Ruth Taylor–and brunette Billie Dove.
  • Garbo and John Gilbert (who “Writes His Own Story” in the June issue) had just appeared together in “Love”, a 1927 film adaptation of Anna Karenina. They’d next co-star in “A Woman of Affairs,” released in late 1928.

Photoplay July-Oct. 1926: A New Look

  • As you can see, Photoplay’s cover now includes the head and torso of the subject. Previously the usual cover shot had been a close-up of the face. We’ll see how long the new look lasts.

  • Boy, hats sure were de rigueur back then, weren’t they? 🙂
  • January cover girl Lois Wilson would later star as Daisy in the first known screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby (1926).
  • Thanks to Citizen Kane, today April cover girl Marion Davies is known primarily for her relationship with William Randolph Hearst. Her career warrants re-examination; she appeared in many silent films and was especially noted for her comedic roles.
  • The May issue features an article by April cover girl Barbara LaMarr on “Why I Adopted a Baby.”
  • The June issue features “A Star in Search of Her Soul” about the very successful and famous serial queen Pearl White.

  • The November issue tackles the question  “Are Women’s Colleges Old Maid Factories? The Results of an Interesting Investigation” by James R. Quirk. 
  • November also features an article touting the “Future Great Actor,  Joseph Schildkraut, a New Griffith Protege.” Schildkraut, the son of actor Rudolf Schildkraut, was starring in Griffith’s Orphans of the Storm with the Gish sisters at the time. His long and illustrious career spanned well into the talkies.
