Photoplay Jan.-Apr. 1927

    • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): Olive Borden, Louise Brooks (as if you couldn’t already tell), Arlette Marchal, and Lois Wilson.
    • Brooks of course would be “rediscovered” in the last quarter of the 20th century. More on her in a later post.
    • Lois Wilson was Daisy Buchanan in the silent film version of The Great Gatsby in late 1926, with actor Neil Hamilton portraying Nick Carraway. Yes, the same Neil Hamilton who later appeared as Commissioner Gordon in the famous 196os Batman TV series!
    • The prolific Hamilton was also in 1927’s The Joy Girl co-starring with January cover subject Olive Borden.

Photoplay July-Oct. 1926: A New Look

  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance:) Dorothy Mackaill, Doris Kenyon, Marion Davies, Alice Joyce.
  • As you can see, Photoplay’s cover now includes the head and torso of the subject. Previously the usual cover shot had been a close-up of the face. We’ll see how long the new look lasts.

  • Cover girls are Leatrice Joy and Lois Moran.
  • These will be the last of the portrait covers for a while; the cover format changes with the July 1926 issue, as we’ll see next time.

  • Betty Bronson was a dancer who nabbed the coveted film role of Peter Pan.
  • April cover girl May Allison would marry Photoplay editor/publisher James T. Quirk in 1926. She’d graced the November 1923 cover.

Photoplay July-Oct. 1924

  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): Anna Q. Nilsson, Betty Compson, Colleen Moore, and making her Photoplay cover debut, Mary Philbin.
  • The August cover features a Compson portrait by Tempest Inman.
  • And if that’s not enough to reel in the reader there’s also the tantalizing question “Is Bobbed Hair An Extravagance?”
  • October cover girl Mary Philbin would go on to co-star with Lon Chaney in 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera.

Photoplay Jan.-Apr. 1924

  • Cover girls (l.-r., in order of appearance): Barbara LaMarr, Corinne Griffith, Pola Negri, Sylvia Breamer.
  • These cover portraits seem languid…somber…serious, don’t they–no sunny colors or smiling visages here.

Photoplay Oct.-Dec. 1923

Photoplay Oct 1923

  • Cover girls (in order of appearance): Alla Nazimova, May Allison, Constance Talmadge.
  • The Nazimova cover really stands out, doesn’t it? No flowers, no hat, no sunny yellow-orange background.
  • As that cover suggests, Nazimova was just as singular an actress. She was theatrically-trained and had appeared in Ibsen and Chekhov on Broadway before moving over to the silver screen. Here she is with Valentino in a 1921 screen adaptation of Camille. Photo from the great site allanazimova.com
